Man with dementia turned away from care home

Philip Jones, 75, has advanced vascular dementia and his family said they believed a place had been secured for him at Whitstable House in Kent, but when he was taken there by ambulance from a local mental health hospital, he was refused entry.

"What would usually happen next is to review the person’s care needs, and look at why they had been turned down by the care home. What we’re hearing on the adviceline is that hospital discharge assessments tend to be light touch, not particularly person-centred and this leads to really poor matches between a person’s actual care needs and the home’s identified [needs]."
